Jaws does not need the shark to symbolize anything. The shark is already enough.

The governing intelligence of Jaws begins with an extremely concrete problem: something in the water is killing people.

From that simple fact, the screenplay constructs an increasingly constrained network of relations. Brody has responsibility without sufficient authority. The town has economic reasons to resist what the evidence demands. Hooper possesses expertise that does not automatically produce institutional action. Quint has practical knowledge bound up with temperament and history. The shark keeps converting every delay, misjudgment and material limitation into consequences.

The architecture then contracts. What begins as a town-wide conflict among danger, evidence, authority and economic interest eventually becomes three men, a damaged boat, limited equipment, open water and an animal they are struggling to understand well enough to survive.

That contraction is part of the screenplay's intelligence. Complexity is not produced by introducing a deeper explanatory system. It is produced by progressively reducing the available room for error.

Why M1, not M2?

The screenplay contains plenty of representation.

The shark is classified, misclassified, discussed scientifically, minimized politically and understood differently by Brody, Hooper and Quint. One could therefore describe the story as a conflict among competing models of the same threat.

But those models do not have to become the governing machinery of the artifact.

Preserve the shark, the deaths, Brody's responsibility, the town's economic resistance, Hooper's expertise, Quint's experience, the hunt and the physical constraints aboard the Orca, and the central architecture remains intact.

The screenplay's representations matter because of what people do with them inside a concrete causal situation. The screenplay does not need to operate through an additional representational system in order to organize that situation.
